Even people who are not particularly interested in running have heard of the Boston Marathon. For some locals the race is another excuse to party. For many serious runners, however, just qualifying for the Boston Marathon is a lifetime goal.

The Boston Marathon began in 1897, making it the second oldest running race in the country. At first, the race was called the Boston Road Race and was 24.5 miles long. It was expanded in 1924 to 26.2 miles and the name was changed to the Boston Marathon.

While this Event in Boston is now an international Event that draws runners from around the world, it started out as something just for locals; for a very few locals in fact. The first race only had 18 participants.

For most of the history of the Boston Marathon, registration was free and there were no cash prizes. That changed in the 1980’s when some of the running elite refused to participate unless prizes were awarded. Corporate sponsors stepped up to meet the demand for cash prizes, which are still awarded to the winners in various categories.

Women were not allowed to participate officially until 1972, but that didn’t stop Bobbi Gibb from becoming the first woman to finish the race in 1966.

Other Boston institutions have their own traditions surrounding this Boston Event. Every year on race day the Boston Red Sox play a morning game. When the game is through, the crowd of fans spills onto the street just in time to watch the runners pass as they enter the final mile.

Entering the Boston Marathon isn’t something you can do casually. Runners must qualify by completing an approved marathon within 18 months before the race and must do so while meeting finish times set by the Boston Marathon organizers. Times vary based on age. For example, to qualify for the 2014 race, a man aged 35 to 39 would need a finishing time of 3 hours and 10 minutes. A woman of the same age would need a finishing time of 3 hours 40 minutes.

Since this race draws more than 500,000 spectators, you will need to book your Hotel Guest Suites very early. Can’t make it this year? Consider booking a Room at The Boston Park Plaza Hotel – A Boston Hotel now for the 2014 race.
