Fenway Park: Still America’s Most Beloved Ballpark and Boston Attraction

If you’re one of the many worldwide fans visiting Fenway Park, book your Boston Stay at Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers – a Boston Hotel and the Official Hotel of the Boston Red Sox.

Although Fenway Park is the oldest Major League baseball park in the United States, it never gets old to visit it – especially if you can experience a Red Sox game firsthand. What better way to spend a warm summer night than going to this old park, beer in hand, watching the game and hearing the crack of the bat?

But even if you aren’t fortunate enough to score a hard-to-get ticket, Fenway Park is still worth a visit. Celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, Fenway Park has been home to dreams being realized, traditions being celebrated and the making of Red Sox Nation for an entire century.

Located at 4 Yawkey Way since 1912, Fenway Park has received numerous renovations throughout the years that have resulted in some fascinating features – many of which can be considered a Boston Attraction in and of themselves.

Most notably is the left field wall nicknamed The Green Monster. Although the wood wall was part of the original construction, it was covered in tin and concrete in 1934 when the scoreboard was added and was painted green in 1947, which covered all the previous advertisements. In fact, advertisements did not appear on the wall again until 1999 when the All-Star Game was being promoted.

In 1976, the wall was covered again, this time in hard plastic. In 2003, the Red Sox ownership constructed a seating section atop the Green Monster to accommodate 274 fans. These seats became wildly popular as “Monster seats” and the team added a similar section in 2005, dubbed the “Nation’s Nest,” located between the main seating section and the center field scoreboard.

The Green Monster measures 37.167 feet and is famous for preventing home runs on many line drives that would clear the walls of other ballparks.

The Lone Red Seat is another noteworthy feature of the stadium. Set amidst row after row of green bleachers, the lone red seat stands out in section 42, row 37, seat 21 and signifies the longest home run ever hit at Fenway Park. The famous hit was sent by Ted Williams in 1946 and was officially measured at 502 feet.

Recent renovations to Fenway Park over the past 10 years have been designed to ensure that the park remains structurally sound for the next 30 – 40 years, and more improvements are planned. Those on the latest list highlight 3 HD video displays and scoring systems, upgrades to the Gate D concourse, and the repair, waterproofing and seat replacements of the lower seating bowl in Right Field.

In addition to Major League Baseball, Fenway Park has hosted many other sporting and cultural events, including concerts and political and religious campaigns.

A Fenway Park Tour provides a riveting, 1-hour walking tour of Fenway Park that shares fascinating points of interest about the stadium and tales about the history that has transpired throughout the past 100 years. Tours are available every hour on the hour between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily and are $16.00 per adult or $12.00 for children ages 3 – 15, students and military.

Pesky’s Pole, “Duffy’s Cliff,” “Williamsburg,” and “The Triangle” also have interesting histories that all add to Fenway Park’s undeniable allure, but some of these quirky features should be left to discover by visitors to this famous ballpark that is sure to be as much a part of the future as it has been of Boston’s – and baseball’s – colorful history.
