About Exploring Castle Island:
Castle Island is an often overlooked Boston Attraction, but it’s worth taking the time to explore. This spot has been home to a fort since 1634. While the original fort is long gone, the current building, Fort Independence, has a rich and interesting history.
Outdoor activities and lovely views are other reasons that this spot is an absolute favorite of locals and worth a stop for visitors. Castle Island is open all year, but the prime time to enjoy this Boston Activity is during the spring and summer.
Carson Beach is a small beach that is often less crowded than other nearby beaches. If you get hungry while at the beach or Castle Island, take a short stroll to Sullivan’s, a no-frills food stand that has been serving up some of South Boston’s best burgers, hot dogs, lobster rolls, ice cream and more since 1951.
The Sugar Bowl is a path shaped like a half moon that stretches out into the harbor and creates a manmade pond called Pleasure Bay. The Sugar Bowl is a beautiful spot for a run or a leisurely stroll. Fishing is another popular Boston Activity at Castle Island. Playgrounds make exploring Castle Island a perfect choice for families with children.
The Fort is open to visitors only during certain days during spring and summer. As of this writing, the 2014 schedule was not yet available, so check the website for this Boston Attraction for updates.
