About Touring Little Brewster Island:
There are many Boston Activities that allow you to explore the rich history of the City and the surrounding areas. One such Boston Thing to Do will take you just a bit off the shore to Brewster Island. Touring Brewster Island is a fun half-day Activity, and the Island is located just a short ferry ride from Boston.
Brewster Island Tours depart from the Boston Harbor Island Pavilion on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and State Street, across from Quincy Market. It is a good idea to make reservations in advance of your visit as this popular Boston Activity sometimes sells out.
During the 45-minute ferry ride, you’ll enjoy the commentary from a knowledgeable guide who will point out historical sites along the way. You’ll see two lighthouses during the ferry ride – The Long Island Light and Graves Light. While both of these are part of Boston’s history, the most important lighthouse awaits once you arrive at Brewster Island.
As you step off the ferry, your tour will continue with a Park Ranger guiding you around Brewster Island, which is an active Coast Guard station. The highlight of the tour is the chance to see the Boston Light. This lighthouse, which was built in 1716, is the oldest continually used lighthouse in the country. You’ll have the opportunity to climb the 76 steps to the top of this National Historic Landmark where you will be treated to sweeping views.
Keep in mind that this is an active military installation, so you will need to be mindful of any instructions and rules given by the tour guide. The entire Tour lasts about 3 hours, and it is a fun Boston Thing to Do for the whole family.
