Boston’s Fireworks Spectacular began like most great things to, as a simple idea from a man who envisioned something better. In 1973, David Mugar suggested to Boston Pops Conductor Arthur Fiedler that the diminishing Esplanade concert series could be revived with a rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, and a few extras thrown in for good measure.
On the next 4th of July, the addition of howitzer cannons, fireworks, and church bells made the Boston even bigger and more exciting, and it created an atmosphere where, as Fiedler said, “All hell could break loose.”
