The Dragon Boat Races and Festival take place annually on the banks of the Charles River, in Boston and Cambridge. Since 1979, the Boston Dragon Boat Festival has grown from a small neighborhood event commemorating the 200 B.C. death of the beloved Chinese poet Qu Yuan to the largest Asian-American culture Event in Boston or New England.
The Boston Dragon Boat Races and Festival draw more than 20,000 participants and spectators. Each year, 30 to 40 teams from the United States and Canada compete on a 500-meter course in an energetic dragon boat race to the finish line.
The dragon boat teams practice in the springtime, in preparation for the June races. Once race time hits, you can see the talented groups of boaters paddling in sleek, colorful, 39-foot Hong Kong-style dragon boats down the Charles River.
