Boston Events like Jewels attract those with a love for the ballet and Balanchine.
The New York Times calls George Balanchine’s “Jewels,” “…the inspiration so sustained, the invention so imaginative," and Boston Ballet fans will surely agree that this production is one of the top Boston Events of the year.
George Balanchine’s renown tour-de-force, “Jewels,” makes its Boston Opera House debut this year and takes up residence at the famous theater from May 22nd to June 1st. Jewels is a vibrant and elegant production featuring “Emeralds,” set to music by Gabriel Faure; “Rubies,” with music by Igor Stravinsky; and “Diamonds,” set to Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3.
Jewels was last presented by the Boston Ballet in 2009. To this day, it remains a brilliant overview of ballet history and style, evoking 3 cities – Paris, New York, and St. Petersburg, each of which figured prominently in Balanchine’s career. Each piece in Jewels wonderfully encapsulates the complex history of classical dance through the opulence of 19th century France. Jewels takes audiences into the imperial style of Russia and it presents Balanchine’s own neoclassical take on dance as an art form.
