Originating in Trinidad, the Caribbean carnival is a spirited showcase of culture, folklore, and tradition that depicts a time when African slaves escaped the trauma of bondage by donning homemade costumes, beating oil drums, and dancing their pain away. In cities across the country, Caribbean carnivals have been growing over the past 40 years, with more elaborate and outrageous costumes, often rivaling those in Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, organizers like to say.

The Parade starts at 1:00 pm and moves along Blue Hill Avenue and culminates in front of Franklin Park Zoo for a distance of about 1.5 miles. The masqueraders begin to gather about 3 – 4 hours prior to the start of the parade on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Roxbury, MA.

There is a food court located in front of the Zoo, which features many different Caribbean and American cuisines.  You will also find arts and crafts, music & video CDs, and so much more.
