Downtown Crossing
101 Arch Street

Downtown Crossing is a shopping district in Boston, Massachusetts, located due east of Boston Common and west of the Financial District. It features large department stores as well as restaurants, music stores, souvenir sellers, general retail establishments, and many street vendors. The section of Washington Street between Temple and Bromfield streets (and portions of Winter and Summer streets) are closed to most vehicular traffic; pedestrians may walk freely in the street.

The Crossing has much to offer with more than 300 independent jewelers and over 200 retailers. Specialty stores such as Bromfield Camera, Brattle Book Shop, and Windsor Button complement flagships like Macy’s, H&M, and Borders. Pushcart vendors offer an assortment of colorful merchandise and enticing food options provide ambiance within the marketplace. Whether you have to make a quick purchase or are looking forward to a leisurely afternoon of shopping, you'll find everything you need at Downtown Crossing.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Summer Street was an upscale neighborhood, with townhouses designed by Charles Bulfinch and others.[3] The Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed much of the neighborhood, especially between Summer, Washington, and Milk Streets.
