With the nights growing longer and the temperatures cooling, Fall is the perfect time to take in theater. Boston has many storied venues that have played host to some of the most beloved shows in music and theater history. Our property’s incomparable location makes it one of the sought-after Boston theater district hotels. Here are some of the best venues near Boston Park Plaza offering great performances this season.

Boston Opera House

Just a few minutes from our front doors, the Boston Opera House (also known as Citizens Bank Opera House) is home to both Boston Ballet and Broadway shows. It’s a spectacular venue that has been recently restored to its original beauty and offers backstage tours, for those interested in the architecture and history of this century-old venue.

This fall sees two musicals hit the stage. In September, it’s Tina — the Tina Turner Musical. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall, the show blends Tina Turner’s life story with her much-loved music. Then, in the second half of October, the Tony-award-winning musical comedy Hairspray arrives to transport audiences to 1960s Baltimore and the dreams of a 16-year-old girl.

The Boston Ballet opens its season on October 6 with My Obsession, a performance of four ballets, including two works by George Balanchine. In early November, renowned choreographer William Forsythe’s As Anticipated is being performed. And the perennial favorite, The Nutcracker opens in late November and runs through the end of the year. It welcomes many one-night-only events, as well as longer-running performances. In late September, the Boston Lyric Theater is performing Puccini’s masterpiece, La Bohème. Opening in November is SIX. This new original work reimagines the lives of King Henry VIII’s six wives as a musical. Presented by Broadway in Boston, the show runs through the end of the year. Boch Center

Another nearby venue is the Boch Center. Home to the Wang and Shubert Theatres, it opened in 1925 and is now proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With one of the five largest stages in the country, it’s welcomed some of theater’s grandest performances. This fall, many one-night only performances will be held. Coming in late November, Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Twas the night before… puts a unique spin on the classic Christmas tale. In the last half of December, Urban Nutcracker arrives, for a Boston-centric take on the beloved story, blending the sounds of Duke Ellington with the music of Tchaikovsky. Tours of the theater are available on select dates. Visit their website for tickets.

Calderwood Pavilion

The award-winning Huntington Theater Company is presenting its 2022/23 series at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts. Their season kicks off with Sing Street, a new musical.
