Long weekends in Boston

Boston is one of the most historic cities in the country with numerous attractions and centuries-old neighborhoods to explore. With so many things to do, see, and experience, spending an extra day (or three) can elevate your time here to a memorable, mini vacation. Boston in the summer is special and the warm weather invites you to slow down, relax and enjoy all that our city has to offer.

Here are some of the best things to do in and around Boston this summer. Be sure to consult our Visitor’s Guide and Calendar of Events for other great ideas.

Historic Boston

Boston Common and the Public Garden are the best places begin your visit. Centuries old, Boston Common was a key location during the Revolutionary War. Today, it is the jewel of the city, comprising 50-acres of walking paths and historic sites.

The Public Garden, established in 1837, was the first botanical garden in the nation. Redesigned in 1859, it is a horticulturist’s wonderland with plant species from around the world. While here, be sure to take a ride on the Swan Boats. This gentle, family-friendly attraction also offers a unique vantage point of the city.

Beacon Hill, just across from the Public Garden, is one of the most beloved, and oldest neighborhoods in Boston. Its narrow, winding lanes and cobbled streets lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants are a delight to explore.

From Boston Common, you can begin discovering the rich history that lines the 2.5 mile long Freedom Trail. Starting just a short stroll from Boston Park Plaza, the Freedom Trail then moves to the Massachusetts State House, the Park Street Church and the Granary Burying Ground. Continue on the trail to other sites such as the Paul Revere House and the Old North Church, before ending at the Bunker Hill Monument, commemorating the first major battle of the Revolutionary War. The Freedom Trail connects 16 nationally significant historic sites that are unrivalled in our country.

Boston Waterfront

Boston Harbor is one of the most active and interesting seaports in the country and one of the oldest too. Start with a tour of the USS Constitution, America’s oldest commissioned warship. Nicknamed “Old Ironsides” during the War of 1812, it provided our country with a vital defense against the British navy. Next, for spectacular views of the city, step aboard a Boston Harbor Cruise. There are a variety to choose from, including a sunset tour. Once you have returned to land, Boston Harbor has many great options to relax over a meal and a beverage. Try Harpoon Brewery for refreshing pints and pub fare, Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar for tasty tapas, and The Barking Crab for delicious seafood.
